Connie Graham scored a screamer but it wasn’t enough to seal a comeback as South Shields Women suffered a 2-1 home defeat to Ponteland United Women on Friday night.
The hosts' evening didn’t get off to the best of starts when Ponteland’s number nine Isla Maggs opened the scoring just four minutes before half-time.
Soon after, and unfortunately for the Mariners, this lead was then doubled as Hannah McIntosh lashed home from distance.
However the second-half saw Shields’ determination and resilience shine through, as in the 54th minute debutant Graham’s stunning volley hooked the lasses back into the game.
The Mariners came into Friday night’s clash against Ponteland United looking to get back to winning ways following their defeat last time out against Bradford City AFC Women.
They also welcomed back Monica Innes, who slotted straight into defence, as well as having new signing Graham on the bench - who was sure to get in the action.
Shields’ evening began brightly with Madison Bouggess’ early chance in the opening quarter of an hour.
She played a fantastic ball around the corner into Julie Raffel’s path, however, Chloe Jackson read the move and collected the ball.
They came close again, this time through Graham, as her one-on-one was too close to Jackson, and again, the shot-stopper came out on top nine minutes before half-time.
Then, just five minutes later, Ponteland crafted an opportunity, one which they took thanks to Maggs.
Shields’ comeback soon got harder as right on the stroke of half-time, McIntosh struck one from distance that flew all the way into the Mariners’ net.
The second-half saw the hosts come out flying though, with aggression, passion and determination, which led to them finding an early goal.
Debutant Graham latched her eyes on the dropping ball before unleashing a devastating volley into the far-left corner, bringing Shields well and truly back into the game.
Unfortunately however, the Mariners couldn’t seem to find the equalising goal in the final 36 minutes of the clash.
The team have a chance to respond when they visit Alnwick Town Ladies on Sunday, March 29th.

I really like the idea of a gioco della parola del giorno—it’s a simple yet fun way to learn something new daily while keeping your mind active and engaged!
I watched a match like this before, and it’s always frustrating when a team fights so hard in the second half but just can’t find that final goal. The comeback energy sounds exciting though, especially with a debut goal—it’s the kind of moment that keeps you watching. Feels a bit like 1v1 lol , where you can turn things around fast, but sometimes time just runs out before you seal it.
I often see people searching for fc mobile mode apk, but it’s always better to play the official version to enjoy safe updates and a smoother gaming experience. ⚽
