SSFC Women put to the sword in heavy Liverpool Feds cup defeat

South Shields Women were put to the sword in an 11-0 loss against Liverpool Feds in the second round proper of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup on Sunday. 

It was a bitter blow for a Mariners side who had taken the tier three opposition - Shields play two tiers beneath them - to a goalless encounter at half-time. 

Nevertheless, the result puts to an end what was a fantastic journey for Alex Miller’s side, who knocked out Ponteland United, FC United of Manchester and Halifax FC to get here. 

A familiar line-up started the game and a familiar face almost got a well-deserved goal, after withstanding some early pressure from the visitors.

Eve Gatens fired a shot which slammed off the crossbar - some of the 333 in attendance thought it might have crossed the line but nothing was given.

That might have been the main talking point from a Shields perspective, though the team did well in the first-half to keep the Feds at bay.

Encouragement was taken from the fact it was scoreless at the break but an unfortunate second-half put to an end any doubt of how this tie was going to go. 

A blistering second-half display from the visitors saw them sweep through to the third round proper, which will be drawn live on Monday morning.
