South Shields Women exited the Adobe Women’s FA Cup at the First Round Proper stage in a 5-0 defeat to AFC Fylde Women on Sunday.
The opening goal was one that was scored in quick time, with the visitors going one goal to the good through Hollie Kelsh-Ridge in the third minute of the game.
The second was rifled in by Lois Moore on the stroke of the half-hour mark.
Fylde went on to score a further three goals in the second-half, with goals coming from Molly Kelly, Kelsh-Ridge again, and finally Grace Hindley in the 50th, 59th and 82nd minutes.
The Mariners came into the FA Cup clash full of confidence, having a Cup spirit among them, following their previous outings in the County Cup as well as the FA Cup against Washington FC Women, Alnwick Town Ladies and Fleetwood Town Wrens.
Needless to say, the afternoon didn’t get off to the best of starts when Kelsh-Ridge netted the visitors' opener inside three minutes.
The captain had space and struck the effort into the net.
In the 10th minute of the game, Shields looked as though they had conceded their second - Anna Yeakey however had other ideas.
The ball was fizzed into the box and Moore was the one to leap up and guide the header towards the bottom left corner; at full-stretch, Yeakey made the save.
The next opportunity of the game came just before the half-hour mark, with Fylde scoring their second of the afternoon thanks to Moore's long-range effort.
It took Shields 38 minutes before they created a great chance at goal.
Eve Gatens whipped in the cross from the left side, Pharyn Ashton rushed out to collect, however her save fell to Jen Wootten who hit the shot back towards goal, but Teal Dunion blocked the attempt.
It took only five minutes into the second-half and Fylde had broken away again, down the left side of the field.
Niamh Corrigan found Moore, who charged toward Yeakey, before cutting it back to Kelly who netted the visitors’ third of the afternoon.
The fourth came directly from the corner, with Kelsh-Ridge scoring her second of the game.
The last goal of the game saw Hindley take on two players before she had a one-on-one, which she tucked away for the Coasters’ fifth goal.
Up next for the lasses is an away trip to Ossett United Women on Sunday, November 2nd (2pm kick-off).
