Julie Raffel admitted South Shields Women found things “tough” against AFC Fylde Women in their Adobe Women’s FA Cup exit on Sunday.
The lasses had high hopes heading into the First Round Proper tie following convincing performances against Washington FC Women, Fleetwood Town Wrens and Wallsend BC Women in all competitions previously, but it wasn’t to be.
AFC Fylde came out comfortable 5-0 winners at 1st Cloud Arena.
“Yeah, Sunday was a tough one,” she shared.
“We didn’t really play our game and got punished for our mistakes, but credit to them, they were sharp.
“We know we’re better than that, so it’s one we’ll learn from and move on.”
Above all, the feeling among the group is that of pride for the journey they have been on, and that was a point Raffel highlighted.
She agreed: “Definitely.
“When you look back at where we started and how far we’ve come, there’s a lot to be proud of.
“The Alnwick game showed what this team is about, and one bad result doesn’t change that.”
Despite the result, the home support made such a big difference and that hasn’t been lost on the team, with some even bringing a drum to generate some atmosphere throughout the afternoon.
“The fans were massive for us,” Raffel continued.
“Even when it wasn’t going our way, they kept us going, and it really meant a lot.
“Playing at 1st Cloud Arena was an amazing experience too.
“The whole setup was quality and the atmosphere was great.”
The lasses have a chance to put things right this Sunday when they travel to Ossett United Women in the NERWFL Premier Division - their first league outing in over a month.
“Can’t wait, to be honest,” she said.
“After a game like that, you just want to get back out there, and it’s a good chance for us to show what we’re about."
She wanted to finish off with some more positive words for the supporters who turned out in their numbers on Sunday.
“Just want to say thanks to everyone who came and supported us,” Raffel added.
“It wasn’t our day, but it meant a lot seeing that support.
“We will learn from it and be ready to go again.”
Match details for this Sunday’s visit to Ossett United will be shared in due course - follow our social media channels for updates, interviews and insights ahead of every game (@SSFCWomen on Twitter/X and @southshieldswomenfc on Instagram).
