Saturday sees Ian Watson’s Mariners clash with Chris Knott’s Leamington FC at the 1st Cloud Arena — a tie which could see Shields gain a further three points on 2nd placed AFC Fylde in the Enterprise National League North.
The fixture will see Watson’s men look to pick up their 18th league win this season, Shields, too, coming off the back of a 1-1 draw away to Buxton FC a fortnight ago, will be hoping to get back to winning ways.
The travelling Leamington currently sit bottom of the league table with 14 points from 23 games. Interim Manager Knott, will be hoping to turn things around in the crucial second-half of their season — with travelling fans hoping the turnaround starts at the 1st Cloud Arena.
Leamington will be looking at their star man and top goalscorer Seb Thompson, to be the one to step up and aid his side to victory and a potential turnaround in their season. Thompson has scored six goals in the league this season, with only one being from a penalty — Watson then for sure, will be drilling the idea into his Mariners to be aware of Thompson’s danger.
The Mariners butted heads with Leamington in just the second game of the season — an away clash which saw Cedwyn Scott get his Shields account up and running and Paul Blackett bag his first of the season.
The league leaders currently sit on 56 points, two ahead of the chasing AFC Fylde, gaining another three points this weekend would be crucial for Watson and his side's hope for promotion.
Shields’ Dan Ward picked up yet another goal in their last outing with Buxton, his fourth in the league this season, despite the result.
