Madison Bouggess’ brace inspired South Shields Women to a 2-0 win over Harrogate Town AFC Women on Sunday.
The lasses got off to a bright opening when Bouggess rounded Amy Hood and slotted in the opener in the 11th minute.
The second of Sunday’s clash didn’t come until injury time when Bouggess thundered a strike across goal to give the Mariners the three points.
Coming into the game, the home Mariners had an incentive - to bounce back from their previous defeat away to Thornaby FC Women.
The starting 11 saw a new face in their front line, with new signing Annabelle Forster beginning up-top with Bouggess and Tianna Hill.
The hosts’ afternoon got off to a flyer when Bouggess capitalised on a defensive howler, rounding Hood and slotting home the first goal in almost 100 days at Harton Welfare.
Just 11 minutes later, the hosts came close to a second, when new signing Forster had her close-range shot in the box blocked and cleared away.
With less than 10 minutes before the half-time whistle, Anna Yeakey thundered a goal-kick towards the front line which dropped into Natalia Campbell’s path, who had a one-on-one, however her strike was denied by an equally great save from Hood.
Then right on the stroke of half-time, with a minute left on the clock, Yeakey pulled off an incredible save which saw the Mariners go into half-time with a single goal advantage.
Lauren Doyle got onto the end of a loose ball and hammered an effort at Yeakey’s top right corner, however the Mariners ‘keeper, at full-stretch, made an unbelievable stop.
Shields didn’t create too many threatening attacks in the second-half, with the Mariners looking to retain possession, get the game over the line and pick up the three points.
With only 15 minutes to play, half-time substitute Alena Miller stepped up, just like Yeakey, to make a superb save again to preserve the home lead.
Hannah Sturdy, once more, was the one who took the shot on from outside the box, however Miller - diving to her right corner of the goal - made the crucial stop.
And then a single minute into injury time, the woman of the minute stepped up again to blast home her second of the afternoon.
Bouggess took the ball past a Harrogate defender, ignored the option to her left and smashed the ball across goal, leaving a standing Hood watching the ball float into her top left corner.
It gives the team a platform to build upon ahead of their visit to league leaders Bradford City AFC Women next time around.
