South Shields FC are thrilled to announce the appointment of Sophie Clough as the new Head of Women's Football. Sophie joins the club in a full-time capacity, bringing her wealth of experience and passion to elevate both the Women's First Team and the recently launched Women's International Academy.
Sophie brings an impressive blend of coaching and playing experience to the role. She spent several years in the top tier of professional women’s football with Portland Thorns FC in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), where she earned a reputation for developing talent and fostering a competitive environment. Alongside her success in the NWSL, Sophie has extensive experience in US college football and academy coaching, working across the complete player pathway in the United States.
Her international coaching experience includes a significant role as Assistant Coach for the Women’s National Team of the US Virgin Islands (USVI) Soccer Association, where she gained valuable insight into national team setups and the development of elite talent. Additionally, she served as Head Coach at the International Football Academy in Mexico, where she continued her work in player development. Her deep understanding of the US collegiate system will be a valuable asset as she works to strengthen and expand the Women’s International Academy, positioning it as one of the premier academies in the country.
Before transitioning into coaching, Sophie enjoyed a distinguished playing career. She represented England at youth level, earning caps for the national U17 to U21 teams. Domestically, she competed in the Women's Premier League with Leeds United Ladies FC after her tenure with Stockport County Ladies FC. Her talents on the pitch led her to the United States, where she secured a prestigious football scholarship at Oregon State University. This combination of high-level playing and coaching experience provides Sophie with a unique perspective and skill set that will benefit the club immensely.
Adam Shaw, Head of South Shields International Academy, commented: “We underwent a thorough recruitment process to identify the top potential individuals for the role. Sophie was the standout candidate, and we are delighted to welcome her to the club officially. Sophie’s coaching background in high-level US women’s soccer combined with her knowledge and understanding of the female US collegiate landscape leaves her ideally suited for the job. Combining the growth of the female International Academy alongside our commitment to grow further and professionalise the women’s first team environment, it’s an exciting time to be part of the wider female project we are undergoing at the club. I would like to thank Women’s First Team Manager Alex Miller and Women’s General Manager Michael Gowens for their support and hard work throughout the process and for driving the women’s section to where we are today.”
Everyone at South Shields FC would like to wish Sophie the best of luck in her new role. We are excited to have Sophie on board and are confident that her leadership will be instrumental in advancing women's football at South Shields FC.
