Julie Raffel has looked back on a “really special” night for South Shields Women after her brace sent the side through to the NERWFL League Cup Final on Thursday.
The versatile attacker proved to be the difference-maker in a very tight contest against Birtley Town Ladies, and she dug deep late on to secure the victory.
“It was really special,” she reflected.
“Scoring two goals in a big game is an amazing feeling, and I’m just happy I could help the team.”
After taking the lead in the 19th minute, the lasses maintained control of the tie despite some attacking threat by the visitors, who later equalised with 12 minutes remaining.
The fact that Shields were able to respond in the 87th minute - Raffel surging forward to head in a Kelsi Hoot cross from a corner - only added to the team’s resilience and resolve.
Raffel continued: “I’m really proud of the team.
“Even after it went 1-1, we stayed strong and kept pushing, and that showed our determination.”
While the Mariners are no doubt excited for the Final, which will be contested against either Leeds Modernians Women or Bradford City AFC Women, they have one game remaining before then.
They travel to Brunsmeer Athletic Women next Sunday in what will be their longest trip in the NERWFL Premier Division, looking to end the campaign in a strong place.
“Yeah, the final is exciting, but our focus now is on the Brunsmeer game,” Raffel affirmed.
“We want to finish the league strong.”
The South Shields FC Women’s International Academy player highlighted the strength of the support she has felt, not only from friends and family abroad, but those at Ford Hub cheering the team on in person.
She finished: “The fans were amazing.
“Their support really helped us, and we’re very thankful for them.”
