Natalie May and Becki McMahon depart SSFC Women after more than a decade

Some goodbyes are harder than others.

After more than a decade, Natalie May and Becki McMahon bring to a close their time at South Shields FC Women, leaving behind a legacy that extends far beyond what happens on the pitch.

Throughout their time at the club, they have given far more than what could ever be measured in appearances or performances. They have dedicated countless hours, given everything for the badge, and continually gone above and beyond to help the club grow both on and off the pitch. Their names have become woven into the fabric of South Shields FC Women, and the impact they have had on this club will be felt for many years to come.

Over the past few years, Becki has led the team as Club Captain, with Natalie serving alongside her as Vice Captain. Together, they have helped guide the team through some of the club's most challenging periods, always leading with humility, resilience and unwavering commitment. They have embodied everything South Shields FC Women stands for and have played an immeasurable role in shaping the culture, standards and identity of the club we see today.

It is no exaggeration to say that South Shields FC Women would not be where it is today without them.

First Team Head Coach, Alex Miller, penned a tribute to the pair: “On a personal note, I want to thank you both from the bottom of my heart.

“We've shared so many years together at this football club - as teammates, leaders, and more recently as coach and players. Throughout every chapter, you've always backed me, supported me, and believed in what we were trying to build together. That trust and loyalty have meant more than you'll ever know.

“While you've been an absolute pleasure to work with, you've also become genuine friends, and I feel incredibly lucky to have shared so many memories with you both. Thank you for everything you've given to me personally and, more importantly, to South Shields FC Women.

“Although we're sad to see you move on, we couldn't be prouder of everything you've achieved. Your legacy at South Shields FC Women is secure, and the impact you've had on this club will be felt for many years to come.

“Everyone at South Shields FC Women thanks you for your incredible dedication, loyalty and service. We wish you both nothing but success in your next adventure and know you'll always have a home here.

"Once a Mariner, always a Mariner."

Natalie May wrote a statement upon her departure, which reads:

"Who would have thought writing this post would be so emotional?

“This has been one of the hardest decisions I've ever had to make. After 11 incredible years, the time has come for me to say goodbye to a team that has been such a huge part of my life.

“What began as simply playing football became something that helped shape who I am. Through every training session, match, victory, and setback, this club became a second home. It gave me lifelong friendships, unforgettable memories, and some of the best times of my life.

“It’s difficult to fully express what this club, my teammates, coaches, and everyone involved have meant to me, past and present. You believed in me during moments when I doubted myself, challenged me to improve, celebrated the highs with me, and helped me through the lows. The experiences we’ve shared have left a lasting mark on my life and  played a huge role in shaping my identity, values, and confidence.

“Leaving isn’t easy because this place has been woven into so many of my most important memories. For more than a decade, it has been a constant source of support, belonging, and purpose. While I know it’s time for a new chapter, a part of me will always remain here. I move forward carrying everything the club has given me, with pride, gratitude, and love.

“To everyone who has been part of this journey, thank you from the bottom of my heart. Thank you for the friendships, the encouragement, the lessons, and the moments that helped make who I am today. Once a part of this team, always a part of this team. I wish Shields nothing but success and luck for the future.

“Up the Mariners.”

Becki McMahon also wrote a statement, which reads:

"Thank you to every teammate, coach, and supporter who's been part of this journey. These 12 years will always hold a special place in my heart and have been filled with incredible memories and people.

"I leave with a full heart and so much gratitude for everything we've shared on and off the pitch. I'm excited for what's ahead, but I'll always look back on my time here with love and pride.

"Wishing the club and all the girls nothing but success in the future."
