South Shields Women captain Becki McMahon believes the team's County Cup run is "something to be proud of" despite exiting in the Semi-Final on Sunday.
They faced tough opposition in the form of Durham Cestria, who play one tier above the Mariners, and who had come into the game having scored 11 goals in their previous two league games.
Although the final result went against the lasses, McMahon was pleased with how Shields dealt with the challenge.
“They’re a really strong side and we knew we’d be up against it from the start,” she reflected.
“We knew coming into it that it’d be a challenge with them being from the league above and the form they’d been in recently.
“We started well and created a couple of good chances early on, but once they got their first, it shifted the momentum a bit.
“We battled hard and tried to stay in it, pushing to get back into the game, but they were dominant and took their opportunities.”
McMahon took to the field for the first time in four weeks with Sunday’s appearance, something she took the time to appreciate.
She said: “Yeah, it felt great to be back.
“It was good to be back on the pitch and around the girls on a match day, especially given the occasion too.”
The bigger picture is that the lasses have reached the County Cup Semi-Final again, which the skipper feels is something worth crediting.
“Absolutely, reaching the County Cup Semi-Final for the second year running is something to be proud of,” she said.
“It shows the progress we’re making as a team and the hard work everyone has put in.
“Despite the disappointment, it’s a solid achievement.”
She finally had some words of praise for those who came along to Ford Hub to cheer them on at the weekend.
“The support was brilliant from start to finish,” McMahon finished.
“We’re gutted we couldn’t give them a final to look forward to, but we really appreciate them turning out in such numbers and backing us.”

I know this feeling: when my team was also eliminated in the semifinals after a successful series, I was upset at first, but then I realized that it is precisely these matches that strengthen character and give you the impetus to move forward.
