MATCH REPORT: SOUTH SHIELDS 3-0 LEAMINGTON

Paul Blackett nets 20th of the season as South Shields dominate in 3-0 Leamington victory

Saturday’s clash at the 1st Cloud Arena started perfectly for the hosts as Oliver Bainbridge’s deflected effort flew past Rogan Ravenhill in the fourth minute of the game.

The Mariners seemed to have a habit of scoring after the referee blew his whistle — as seconds into the second-half Will Jenkins strike put the hosts two goals to the good.

Ian Watson’s Mariners came into today’s clash against Leamington with two changes following their previous away outing to Buxton FC. Cedwyn Scott was back in the starting eleven with Lennon Wheeldon dropping to the bench so too was Sean McGurk, in favour of Cain Sykes.

The Mariners started with the dangerous front two of Scott and Blackett — the men with a combination of 29 goals in the league this season.

Shields began emphatically dominating possession and soon after opening the deadlock.

Bainbridge was sent through, down the left channel by Ward and fizzed a dangerous ball into the box which deflected past Ravenhill.

Watson’s side came close to a second in the 37th minute when Sykes whipped in a delicious ball into a stretching Scott, however his effort rattled the outside of the post.

The next opportunity of the game came just seconds into the second-half when Jenkins cross crashed into the back of the net.

Soon after an immediate impact was made by January signing Sonny Finch from the bench.

Finch bombed down the right side and thrashed the ball into the box which deflected into the path of Blackett who swept the ball into the bottom left-corner right on the hour-mark.
