Match Report: Buxton 1-1 South Shields

South Shields picked up a point on the road against Buxton in their first game of 2026.

The Enterprise National League North leaders took the lead through Dan Ward in the 59th minute but the Mariners’ lead was surrendered 13 minutes later through Adriel Walker.

Due to results elsewhere in the division, Shields remain top of the pile by two points going into the next round of fixtures.

Joe Young floundered as he rushed out for the ball in the sixth minute which saw Paul Blackett surge through on goal but a last-gasp clearance prevented the forward from capitalising on it.

Buxton pressured well following their first corner three minutes later, which resulted in Johnny Johnston narrowly placing his shot wide of the post.

Things became end-to-end soon, and a saw a wayward delivery into the box for Buxton transformed itself into a flourishing counter-attack for the Mariners.

Blackett found Sean McGurk who positioned himself centrally in the six-yard box - Max Bardell did just enough to get in the way to stop what looked like a surefire goal.

Other chances of note within the first-half included an absurd Shields clearance which struck their own crossbar, a confident stop by Tom Watson from close-range and a well-worked moment to grab the ball back on the stroke of half-time.

While Shields didn’t have a goal advantage to show for the display, they could be relatively pleased with the way things had gone on a surface which had clearly been affected by the weather.

That pressure continued after the restart and the Mariners had a couple of strong chances; first through McGurk and secondly through Blackett.

Ward would be the man to give the visitors the lead just before the hour mark - substitute Cedwyn Scott made an immediate impact as he instigated the move which led to Ward rolling the ball into the net.

A late delivery from Buxton's Ryan McLean on the edge of the box found Walker who equalised in the 72nd minute.

There would be little movement from that point and both sides settled for a point apiece.

Ian Watson’s side are out of action for a fortnight now, with the next game being at home to Leamington on Saturday, January 17th (3pm kick-off).

I'm Happy with a point away from home, especially on a tough surface and against a side like Buxton. We showed good character, stayed top of the league, and that’s what matters going into the next fixtures. Geometry Dash
