Match Preview: South Shields v Grimsby Town

South Shields welcome Grimsby Town to the 1st Cloud Arena in a special pre-season fixture.

The game dubbed 'The Mariners Cup' sees the two Clubs united by nickname go head to head.

It is also a celebration and tribute fixture to Club captain Robert Briggs.

Briggs is the Club's record appearance maker with over 400 games played for Shields.

Grimsby travel to the North East after winning three of their four pre-season games - losing 2-1 away to York City last time out.

The League Two side, led by David Artell, will be hoping to kick on and have a successful campaign after finishing 21st last season.

Elliott's thoughts

Manager Elliott Dickman has spoken highly on the occasion and the tribute the fixture will pay to the Captain of his side.

"We are really looking forward to Grimsby and the fact that it is a tribute to Robert Briggs.

"He has been a fantastic servant to the Club and will continue to be.

"It is an honour that we are able to do something like this for Briggsy."

Briggs made his 400th appearance for the Club last season against Spennymoor Town.

"We are expecting a difficult game but we will continue with our progress as a team.

"Like I keep saying, it is all about getting ready for the trip to Hereford, so as long as we can see improvement in that.

"It will be difficult but it is a challenge that we will certainly be giving our best efforts to."

Shields have signed former Grimsby defender Jamie Bramwell on a half-season loan from Gateshead.

There is segregation in place for this fixture and visiting supporters are to enter the ground via turnstiles 3 and 4.
