Match Preview: Chorley vs South Shields

South Shields are back in Vanarama National League North action on Tuesday when they travel to Lancashire to take on Chorley (7.45pm kick-off).

The Mariners moved up to second with a 2-0 victory over King's Lynn Town on Saturday, extending their unbeaten run at 1st Cloud Arena.

They have recorded just one win on the road, though, and will be aiming to double that tally against eighth-placed Chorley.

The Magpies were beaten 5-0 by Rushall Olympic on Saturday, but that was a rare aberration in what has otherwise been a strong start to the season.

Julio's thoughts

Shields manager Julio Arca insists little can be read into Chorley's weekend defeat.

He said: “We know Chorley will be determined to bounce back, as every team is when they have a result like that.

“They’re a good side and certainly a lot better than that score suggests, so we will have to be at 100% if we’re to get the result we’re looking for.

“We didn’t have any time to celebrate our win on Saturday because we know the challenge we’ve got ahead of us on Tuesday.

“Of course, we’re going there aiming for a positive result, but it’s going to be difficult.”

Myles Boney saved an early penalty on his way to a man of the match award on Saturday, with Shields going on to largely control proceedings against a spirited King’s Lynn side.

Arca has called on his players to pick up where they left off in that second half.

He added: “It was a good performance, especially in the second half with the intensity we had.

“I felt we deserved to win the game, and we needed to.

“It’s up to us to follow that up now.”

Team news

Shields are expected to remain without forward Joao Gomes, who is out with a knee injury.

They will also hope to have midfielder Michael Woods available after he was forced off at half-time on Saturday due to feeling unwell.
