SSFC Women prepare for Moors test at Harton Welfare

South Shields Women host Spennymoor Town Ladies, in what will be the fourth tie between the two sides this season, this Sunday at Harton Welfare (2pm kick-off).

The previous three affairs have all been goal fests, so it is no surprise that the Moors and Shields have the division’s strongest offensive records, not only in terms of goals scored but goal difference as well.

Spennymoor have scored 64 to Shields' 58, and Shields are one up in the goal difference battle (+34 compared to +33).

The visitors were 3-0 winners at Harton in the NERWFL League Cup - Shields’ first competitive game of the season -  courtesy of a hat-trick by Autumn Colledge.

Annece Legg proved to be the hero in October’s visit to New Ferens Park, when she scored twice, in a 3-0 victory which sent the Mariners into the second round of the Durham FA Women’s Cup.

Spennymoor thrashed Shields 8-2 the last time the teams met, so the lasses will head into this game hoping not to repeat the same mistakes as they did at The Brewery Field last month.

Alex’s thoughts

Promotion contenders Wallsend BC Women were defeated thanks to a stoppage-time double by Alnwick Town Ladies on Wednesday night, and head coach Alex Miller believes that result can be significant, but only if her side makes it count this weekend.

“We do need to capitalise on that,” she said, “and make sure we do use it to our advantage.

“Going into the game as strong as possible, and as confident as possible will hopefully set us up in a good way to be able to achieve that going forward.”
