SSFC Women meet York RI for first league encounter on Sunday

South Shields Women return to Harton Welfare this Sunday when they face newly-promoted York RI Ladies in the NERWFL Premier Division (2pm kick-off).

The Mariners will want to return to winning ways, after last week’s 4-4 draw against Sunderland West End Ladies, and they will come up against a York side who will be hoping for better fortunes, too.

Sunday’s visitors have lost both league games they have played and currently sit bottom of the table, although at this stage of the season, the table is subject to heavy change each gameweek.

Last time out, they lost 6-1 at home against recently-relegated Chester-le-Street Town Ladies, who stormed to the 2022/23 title, the last time they were in this league.

Regardless, the focus is on Shields this weekend to focus on themselves and the task at hand, a point that was made clear during training this week.

Alex’s thoughts

Head coach Alex Miller is relishing the opportunity to welcome a new side to South Tyneside.

“We’re looking forward to meeting a new team,” she said.

“You come up against the same faces all of the time so it’s great to welcome a new team into the league.

“They’re here because they deserve it, so [we’re] looking forward to meeting York at the weekend.”

Information for supporters

Kick-off at Harton Welfare (NE34 0NA) is at 2pm this Sunday, September 15th.

Entry is free - your backing made such a big difference a fortnight ago against Spennymoor Town Ladies and it would be incredible if you could give the lasses a helping hand on Sunday!
