SSFC Women host Barnsley in promotion six-pointer

South Shields Women welcome Barnsley FC Women to Harton Welfare this Sunday in what is almost certainly a promotion six-pointer (2pm kick-off).

The two sides sit fifth and third in the NERWFL Premier Division as things stand, but the division is so tight that the top six teams are separated by just four points.

Alex Miller’s side will be hoping to put aside January’s narrow defeat - which heartbreakingly came with minutes to spare - at Oakwell 3G aside, with the team expected to be full of confidence after last weekend’s 4-1 victory against Sunderland West End Ladies.

Sophie Curle and Eve Gatens have worked well up front: Curle has scored six goals in just three games since signing, and that has included a hat-trick last week!

Barnsley head into the game having lost back-to-back league games, but also off the back of an impressive 6-0 win against Hull United Women in the League Cup.

Alex’s thoughts

Head coach Alex Miller has highlighted the fact that every point counts as we enter a crucial stage of the season, where half of the division are so tightly-packed together.

She said: “Every single year in this league it’s so close and it gets harder and harder every year so every point does count.

“We’re still taking it each game as it comes but we’re still pushing, we’re still aiming to get up there and see how far we can get up but there is not much in-between it at all.”

Information for supporters

Kick-off at Harton Welfare (NE34 0NA) is at 2pm this Sunday, March 10th.

Entry is free and we’d love to see as many of you over as possible. It’s a big game and it could go a long way in deciding how the next part of the season goes!
