SSFC Women end season with away trip at Sunderland West End

South Shields Women aim to end their season on a high note when they face Sunderland West End Ladies on Wednesday night (7pm kick-off).

Hopes at securing the league title were mathematically ended on Sunday when the lasses lost 5-1 to likely champions Barnsley FC Women, meaning Wednesday’s game has only pride going for it.

A win, depending on results over the coming weeks elsewhere, could be enough to secure Shields a top 3 spot for the first time since 2018-19.

Points-wise, this is already the Mariners’ most successful campaign, with their 41 points eclipsing the previous record of 38 points set in 2018-19, their inaugural campaign in the NERWFL Premier Division.

Sophie Curle scored her first hat-trick for the Mariners in the reverse fixture back in March, during a 4-1 win for Shields at home.

Alex’s thoughts

Although the lasses will not be lifting silverware this year, there is a lot to be positive about and that is the important message from head coach Alex Miller heading into the summer.

“It’s one of the best, if not the best season we’ve had," she shared, “so we’ve set ourselves up really good going into next season.

“Gutted promotion is not on the cards, there’s always next season and [with] the way women’s football is going, hopefully the quality will continue to improve as well.

“Definitely for Wednesday, it’s a big game as well against West End. It’s always a really competitive game against them, [a] really exciting one.”
