South Shields U18s Secure Hard-Fought 2–1 Victory

South Shields U18s secured a hard-fought 2–1 victory in an entertaining contest that featured two late penalties.

After a cagey opening few minutes, Ahmed Killic had the first opportunity of the game on the counter, but his effort was comfortably gathered by the Harrogate goalkeeper.

Another promising Shields attack followed shortly after when Saul Judson led a forward move, but Maddox Evitt’s effort sailed just over the crossbar.

Moments later, Killic found himself in behind the Harrogate defence once again, only to see his shot flash narrowly wide of the post.

Harrogate’s first real chance arrived in the 17th minute, but Jack Whittle-Richens produced a strong save to deny the forward and keep the game level.

Killic remained heavily involved throughout the first half and, in the 40th minute, his hold-up play won Shields a free-kick on the edge of the area. Jonathan Lally rose highest to meet the delivery, but his header drifted just over the bar.

The Mariners made the perfect start to the second half, taking the lead within the opening minute. Killic delivered a ball across the box which found Judson arriving at the back post, and he calmly converted to give Shields the advantage.

Around the hour mark, Shields made a change as Jayden Roach replaced Martin after a tireless performance.

Roach almost made an immediate impact when Killic flicked the ball into his path, allowing him to cut inside onto his left foot and fire a shot at goal, but the Harrogate goalkeeper was equal to the effort.

In the 73rd minute, Whittle-Richens was called into action again, producing a stunning save to deny a powerful long-range strike and preserve Shields’ lead.

With five minutes remaining, Killic won a penalty after being shoved by a defender inside the box. The forward stepped up himself and calmly converted from the spot, sending the goalkeeper the wrong way to double the Mariners’ lead.

However, the drama was not over. Just minutes later, Harrogate were awarded a penalty of their own. Whittle-Richens managed to get a hand to the effort but was unable to keep it out as the visitors pulled a goal back.

Despite the late pressure, the Mariners held firm to secure a deserved victory and take the three points.
