South Shields FC support Children’s Cancer North and Arthur

The heartwarming story of young Arthur Salters-Hoult has become a beacon of inspiration for South Shields Football Club. With the support of Children’s Cancer North, the club has successfully raised funds and awareness for children like Arthur.

Children’s Cancer North, formed in 2021 from the merger of North of England Children’s Cancer Research and Children’s Cancer Fund, has raised over £40 million since 1979 to support children with cancer in the North East and Cumbria.

Emma Carson, Community and Events Fundraising Officer at Children’s Cancer North, expressed her delight at the club’s efforts, stating, "Working with Carl Mowatt and South Shields FC has been a fantastic experience.

The community's turnout at the events was heartening. The support and enthusiasm shown by everyone were incredible, and it was an honour to collaborate with the club and meet Ricky Hoult and young Arthur."

Carl Mowatt, Commercial Director of South Shields FC, has personally raised over £5,000 for Children’s Cancer North. Reflecting on his achievement, Carl said, "Reaching my goal of £5,000 was a thrilling moment.

It all started when I met Arthur Salters-Hoult and his dad Ricky in January at the RVI ward, where I also first connected with Emma Carson. Arthur’s story deeply moved me, and I felt compelled to help by setting a fundraising target of £5,000 for him and Children’s Cancer North."

The funds were raised through two major events. The first was a sportsman’s dinner featuring Kevin Ball and John Beresford, where donations were gathered through auctions and raffles.

This event, organised by Carl with help from Aaron Burn of the International Academy of SSFC and his colleagues from the University of Northumbria, was a resounding success.

The second event, named Arthur’s Newland Mariners Marathon, took place in April. Carl, joined by friends, ran a pitch-to-pitch marathon from 1st Cloud Arena to the Stadium of Light, then on to Gateshead Stadium, finishing at St. James Park, where he was greeted by Arthur at the finish line.

"It was a day filled with pride, raising awareness about Arthur’s rare cancer and the extraordinary work done by Emma and the Children’s Cancer North team," Carl shared. "Arthur holds a special place in my heart, and his dad Ricky and I have become good friends.

We regularly catch up over coffee, and when Arthur is well enough, they visit 1st Cloud Arena. We hope Arthur will be well enough to be the club mascot on August 4th when South Shields play against Newcastle U21."
