Mariners Win Eight-Goal Thriller as Super Sub Gill Strikes Twice

The Mariners secured victory in an eight-goal thriller, with substitute Elliot Gill making a huge impact from the bench by scoring twice.

The first opportunity of the game fell to Shields after bright attacking play down the wing saw a scramble in the Bridlington penalty area eventually result in a corner for the Mariners.

Around the 10th minute, Bridlington took the lead from a corner after Caleb Hulley was crowded inside the box, allowing the visitors to find the back of the net.

Just minutes later, Shields had a golden chance to equalise when they were awarded a penalty. However, Callum Patterson-Wright saw his effort crash against the crossbar, leaving the Mariners still trailing.

The miss was quickly avenged in the 15th minute when Joe Harrison-Hogarth finished calmly in a one-on-one situation to bring Shields back level.

The game continued at a frantic pace and, in the 22nd minute, Bridlington restored their lead in what was quickly becoming a fiery and competitive contest.

As the first half drew to a close, Patterson-Wright cut inside from the wing and unleashed a powerful effort from distance, but the Bridlington goalkeeper was equal to it.

Shields once again drew level early in the second half. In the 53rd minute, Harrison-Hogarth grabbed his second of the match with a composed finish after a cut-back from Patterson-Wright.

Substitute Saul Judson soon made his presence felt, delivering a pinpoint cross that fellow substitute Elliot Gill powered home with a strong header to give the Mariners the lead for the first time.

The momentum stayed firmly with Shields and, just a minute later, Gill struck again with a cool finish through the goalkeeper’s legs to extend the advantage.

Bridlington reduced the deficit in the 85th minute to set up a nervy finale for the Mariners.

However, Shields quickly restored their two-goal cushion just a minute later when another excellent Judson corner was met by Jack Slee, who finished well to seal the victory.

The Mariners will now look to build on the performance as they head into their next fixture.
