Match Report: South Shields 6-0 Spennymoor Town

Cedwyn Scott's first-half hat-trick aids South Shields to six-goal Boxing Day demolition

The opening goal of Shields’ Boxing Day clash came for the visitors just 16 minutes in when Scott headed home.

Six minutes later Scott was at it again firing past Bradley James.

With eight minutes left of the first-half the Mariners picked up a third — Scott bagging himself a hat-trick.

Ian Watson’s side weren’t finished there as they picked up three more goals in the second-half — Todd Alcock and Dan Dodds picking up goals in the 62nd and 66th minutes and Paul Blackett scoring in injury-time.

The Mariners came into the game with spirits high following their previous 3-1 away win to Chester.

All goalscorers in that game — Blackett, Will Jenkins and Scott were present in Watson’s eleven on Friday.

The game began and within the opening ten minutes Tom Watson stepped up and performed a crucial double save keeping the score level.

Three minutes later Shields got their first opportunity which saw Ethan Mann deliver an exquisite pass into Dodds who took the ball in his stride and tried to lob Bradley James; however, the keeper stood tall and made the save.

The first goal of the afternoon came soon after and what a wonderful goal it was.

Oliver Bainbridge from the left-wing position whipped a delicious ball into the box for Scott who leapt up and headed the ball into the bottom right corner.

The second of five Shields’ goals came just six minutes later and again it was Scott getting himself on the scoresheet, however the build up to the goal was pure footballing magic.

Sean McGurk played an outside of the foot pass into Bainbridge who whipped the ball into the box, Spennymoor cleared it, however into the path of Jenkins who found Scott and inevitably the striker tucked the ball into the net.

Then with eight minutes left of the first-half the Mariners bagged a third — Scott claiming the match ball.

Jenkins at the heart of the move played the ball out wide to Blackett who knocked the ball back across into Scott who once more smashed the ball into the bottom left corner.

South Shields weren’t done there as Alcock picked up their fourth of the afternoon.

Cain Sykes charged into the box fizzed the ball into danger however it was cleared by the visitors, fortunately for the hosts it was cleared into Alcock’s path who lashed the ball back at goal and into the net.

The Mariners fifth goal of their rampant six-goal performance came with 24 minutes left on the clock.

Blackett worked his way down the right side and fired the ball into the box which deflected off Dodds and into the back of the net.

And then right on the stroke of full-time Blackett tucked away from close-range, bagging his first but Shields’ sixth of the afternoon.
