After four years at the club, Martin Smith will depart the club upon the expiry of his contract with the Mariners.
Smith joined South Shields FC in 2022 and was the second signing under former Mariners manager Kevin Phillips. He would go on to play a pivotal role in their title-winning season, securing promotion to the National League North, finishing at the top spot on 85 points in the Northern Premier Division. Smith scored three goals and assisted five in his inaugural season.
Every day, Martin set very high standards, which would only have a positive impact on his teammates, and he would stand to be a role model to some of the younger players inside the dressing room.
Martin Smith had a few words to say upon his departure
"My time at the club as a player has come to an end, but I look back on the last four years with pride, knowing I gave everything and played a small part in helping the club progress and move forward, which was my aim when I first signed.
I want to say a huge thank you to every player and staff member I’ve had the pleasure of working with. We’ve shared some unbelievable memories on and off the pitch that will stay with me forever.
Lastly, to the fans - thank you for your unwavering support. You are the heartbeat of this club and the driving force behind its success, so please keep backing the lads through the good times and the bad.
All the best, Smudge."
Smith featured 141 times for South Shields FC and was named vice captain during the 24/25 season.
We cannot thank Martin enough for his time here at South Shields Football Club, and we wish him well for what comes next.
