A late free-kick saw South Shields U18s exit the ESFA Cup after a narrow 3–2 defeat to T6 Academy in a hard-fought quarter-final.
T6 took the lead in the 11th minute when their striker finished into an open net following a low ball across the box.
It didn’t take long for Shields to respond and build momentum. Calvin McCarthy came close to equalising after driving past his full-back and into the penalty area, only to see his effort crash against the crossbar.
The Mariners continued to threaten and, on the half-hour mark, Joe Harrison-Hogarth found himself one-on-one with the T6 goalkeeper, who produced a strong save to keep his side ahead.
The visiting keeper was called into action again soon after when Maddox Evitt cut inside onto his left foot and forced another good stop.
Despite Shields pushing hard for an equaliser, it was T6 who struck next, doubling their lead and leaving the Mariners with a difficult task heading into the latter stages of the half.
Shortly afterwards, Oliver Cassels made way for Harry Hewitt as Shields looked to change the momentum of the game.
The Mariners started the second half brightly and were rewarded in the 52nd minute when Harrison-Hogarth found the back of the net to bring Shields back into the contest.
Moments later, substitute Hewitt won a penalty, which McCarthy calmly converted to bring the score level and complete the comeback.
Shields were handed a further boost just a minute later when T6 were reduced to ten men following a red card, allowing the Mariners to push forward in search of a winner.
However, from a Shields corner, T6 broke quickly on the counter and won a free-kick on the edge of the box. The T6 captain stepped up and converted the set-piece to restore his side’s lead, a goal that ultimately proved to be the winner.
Despite the late setback, Shields showed great character to fight back from two goals down and will now turn their attention back to league action.
