Jon Shaw leaves club after seven years

After seven tremendous years of service, Jon Shaw has departed his role at South Shields FC.

Shaw joined the Mariners as a player in the summer of 2016 and went on to play an integral role in the club’s growth.

He made 211 appearances, scoring 27 goals, and was a key part of two promotion campaigns and five trophy wins.

His influence was felt on and off the pitch, with Shaw captaining the club between 2018 and 2020 before becoming assistant manager under Graham Fenton, and continuing his coaching role with the first-team until the summer of 2022.

Shaw became a full-time member of staff at 1st Cloud Arena in June 2019 when he was appointed head of professional development, providing an additional bridge between the first-team and Academy and helping numerous young players on their pathway to the senior team.

He re-assumed that position in June 2022, continuing his burgeoning coaching career within the club’s Academy after his playing duties took him to Dunston.

After a year with Dunston, Shaw was approached by Blyth Spartans and agreed to become Fenton’s assistant for a second time. In addition, a full-time job opportunity elsewhere led him to vacate his role as Shields’ head of professional development.

All at South Shields FC would like to thank Jon for his outstanding efforts over the last seven years.

He and his family will always be welcome at 1st Cloud Arena and we look forward to seeing him back for our fixture with Blyth in the 2023-24 season.

Thank you and good luck, Jon!
