Carl Magnay appointed Assistant Manager

South Shields FC are delighted to announce the appointment of Carl Magnay as assistant manager for an undisclosed fee.

Carl joins having just left Gateshead FC as 1st Team Manager where he saw the Heed finish inside of the play-offs during the 23/24 season and finishing just one point away from a play-off spot after the recently concluded 24/25 season.

The ex-professional enjoyed a successful playing career, starting at non other than Chelsea FC where he was loaned out twice to MK Dons and Northampton.

Magnay would then move back up north where he played over 200 games for the likes of Gateshead, Hartlepool United, Spennymoor Town and Grimsby Town.

Magnay stepped into coaching in 2015, starting at Pro Player Football Academy, then in 2019, he stepped into the role of Youth Talent Scout in the North East of England for Chelsea.

Following his retirement in 2023, Carl stayed at Gateshead and joined the coaching staff under Mike Williamson alongside newly appointed South Shields FC Manager, Ian Watson.

Magnay would then go on to stay with Mike Williamson’s staff, coaching at MK Dons and Carlisle United before returning to Gateshead FC as 1st Team Manager.

Magnay joins the Mariners alongside Ian Watson as Assistant Manager.
