An open letter from SSFC Women Head Coach, Alex Miller

Dear South Shields FC Supporters,

As the festive season brings us together and we approach the end of 2024, I wanted to take a moment to reflect on this season so far and share my gratitude and excitement for the journey ahead.

This season has been a significant milestone for me personally, as it marks my first official role as Head Coach. It has been an honour and a privilege to lead this fantastic group of players, and I’ve embraced the challenges and opportunities that come with it. One of these opportunities has been the launch of our Club’s Women’s International Academy - a development that has already begun to bear fruit.

The addition of talented players from across the globe has enhanced our performances on the pitch and enriched our team culture. It’s been incredible to see how these players have integrated into the squad and contributed to our success.

I also want to take a moment to acknowledge the hard work and talent of our players. Their commitment and relentless effort have been crucial to our achievements so far this season. Each player has shown incredible dedication, both in training and on matchdays, and it’s their passion for the game that has propelled us forward. The strength of this squad lies not only in individual talent but in the collective energy and determination they bring to every challenge. I’m proud of the growth we’ve seen, and I’m excited to see how far we can go together.

At the start of the season, we expanded our coaching staff by welcoming Sophie Clough and Antony Lowerson, two highly experienced coaches whose expertise and fresh ideas have been pivotal in shaping our strategies and development.

Although Ant’s time with us has been brief, his contributions have been truly remarkable. As he moves on to pursue exciting new opportunities, we celebrate the lasting impact he’s made on our team and wish him all the best. His legacy will continue to inspire us as we move forward with renewed focus and determination. Meanwhile, Sophie’s impact has been immediate, and I’m excited to see how her contributions will continue to help us reach even greater heights in the future.

Looking ahead to 2025, I am eager to put my own stamp on this team. The first half of the season has been a tremendous learning experience, and I’ve gained valuable insights into what works, where we can improve, and how we can grow stronger together. My goal is to refine our approach, enhance our performance, and ensure that we continue to evolve as a cohesive and competitive unit.

Of course, none of this would be possible without you, our incredible supporters. Your unwavering passion and loyalty have been a driving force behind everything we’ve achieved so far. From the stands to the sidelines, your energy and encouragement have lifted us through every challenge and celebrated with us in every victory.

Your belief in us was especially evident during our historic run in the Women’s FA Cup. Your cheers, chants, and unwavering support were the driving force behind our progression to the Second Round Proper - the first time in the club’s history. You were the 12th player on the pitch, and your energy gave us the strength to achieve something truly special.

As we head into 2025, I want to thank each and every one of you for being part of this journey. Together, we’ve already achieved so much, and I firmly believe the best is yet to come. Here’s to a happy and healthy new year - I can’t wait to see you in the stands as we continue this incredible journey together.
