Alex Miller and Sophie Clough named co-head coaches of SSFC Women

Alex Miller and Sophie Clough have been named co-head coaches (joint managers) of South Shields FC Women’s first team moving forward. 

Miller continues in her role which she has served since March 2024, while Clough joins her as co-head coach, alongside her current role as Head of Women’s Football at SSFC. 

Clough brings a wealth of experience in coaching, including several years in the top tier of professional women’s football with Portland Thorns FC in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL), internationally as Assistant Coach for the US Virgin Islands’ Women’s National Team, and as Head Coach at the International Football Academy in Mexico.

As Head Coach, Miller guided the team to the second-round proper of the Adobe Women’s FA Cup for the first time in the club’s history, defeating third-tier Halifax FC Women on penalties in the process. 

Not only that, but the Mariners have reached the semi-finals of the DCFA Women’s Cup and are in a competitive position in the NERWFL Premier Division table, in order to hit the ground running after the Christmas break.

As part of these new year progressions, the club will be providing support for continuing coach education along with bringing Miller under contract with the club, the first in women’s team history at South Shields FC. - a sign of how much the club values and believes in Miller’s abilities. 

This move further demonstrates the club’s commitment and long-term investment in the women’s pathway as it provides more direct support for the women’s first team.

Michael Gowans, the club’s General Manager, and coach Jake Lumsdon will continue in their current positions, both playing significant roles and being key contributors in the success of the women’s team so far.
