South Shields Women entertain Wallsend BC Women at Harton Welfare this Sunday for another tantalising NERWFL Premier Division six-pointer (2pm kick-off).
The Mariners head into this weekend’s game knowing anything but a win would dent their chances of promotion into the FAWNL Division One North, but head coach Alex Miller has previously urged her side to take things “each game as it comes.”
Wallsend sit third in the table, with the league’s best record when taking points-per-game into account: their 35 points in just 15 games puts them in arguably the strongest position out of all the teams.
Shields have picked up 32 points in 16 games which puts the lasses fifth. The top six are separated by just five points at this stage of the season, so supporters can expect the standings to shift considerably over the coming weeks.
The two teams last met in September, when Jaz Elliott-Wood and Eve Gatens brought Shields level, after falling behind twice, to play out a competitive 2-2 draw.
Alex’s thoughts
Sunday’s tie is crucially important when it comes to determining how the Mariners finish the season, and Miller believes a good result at the weekend could go a long way in making or breaking a title push.
“It’s massive”, she said.
“Everyone goes out to play a game of football to get the win and get those three points, so that’s definitely what we’ll be doing this weekend.
“We never go out looking for anything else so it’ll be the same again, going out, putting our best performance in and hopefully getting those really, really important three points.”
