Sam Bartram Cup 2022: Mariners make short Boldon trip

Updated: Sep 27, 2022

The annual Sam Bartram Memorial Cup match is being held at Boldon CA on Monday, July 18th.

A South Shields XI will head to The Villa to take on the Northern League Division Two side for what will be a 7.30pm kick-off.

It is expected to be a young Mariners team and they are sure to face a stern test against a Boldon outfit which narrowly missed out on promotion to the top tier of the Northern League last season, finishing one place behind the automatic promotion spots before being beaten in the play-offs.

It was an impressive campaign from Boldon in their first season since winning promotion from the Wearside League.

They are the current holders of the Sam Bartram Memorial Cup, having beaten Shields 2-1 in a tight encounter last July.

Kick-off at The Villa on Monday is at 7.30pm and admission prices – payable by cash at the turnstiles only – are £5 for adults and £3 for concessions.

There are plenty of parking places at or around the ground (postcode NE35 9AN).

Boldon Colliery can also very easily be reached by public transport, with a number of buses passing through the village and Brockley Whins Metro Station under a 10-minute walk away.

The match honours the memory of Sam Bartram, who played for clubs including Boldon Villa and Boldon Colliery Welfare before achieving fame with Charlton Athletic, who he represented between 1934 and 1956.

During World War Two, he made guest appearances for Notts County, Bournemouth, Liverpool, Brentford, Crystal Palace, York City, Bradford and West Ham United.

He won three unofficial England caps and won the FA Cup in 1947.

Many regard him as one of the greatest goalkeepers never to win a full international cap.
