MATCH REPORT: SOUTH SHIELDS 3-0 RADCLIFFE

Crafty Caden Kelly corner and Cedwyn Scott double leads Mariners to dominant 3-0 win.

A crafty, but clever goal was scored directly from the corner flag by Kelly only seven minutes after the opening whistle.

Shields then doubled their lead in the 52nd minute thanks to Scotts’ left-footed drilled effort.

Scott then stuck away the third, securing himself a brace in the 90th minute.

The Mariners came into Tuesday nights’ fixture with Radcliffe FC top of the Enterprise National League North, hoping to keep their unbeaten run intact and add to their tally of 16 points at the top of the table.

Shields will hope to keep Rio Clegg quiet with the forward being in fine form following his hat-trick in Radcliffe’s last outing against Oxford City.

South Shields and Radcliffe FC kicked-off and commemorated two men who had sadly passed away on Saturday evening.

The minute silence was very well received.

A strong early start was displayed within the opening five minutes from the Mariners, with Ian Watson’s side holding possession well and posing a threat.

Two minutes later this strong start paid off.

Shields won another corner which Kelly swung in and caught everyone out and creeped in at the near post.

Twenty minutes later, the opposition created their first real chance of the game.

Radcliffes’ Rio Clegg barraged down the right side and broke into the box but lashed the ball up and over for a goal-kick.

The Mariners next chance wasn’t created until early into the second-half.

Thankfully, this opportunity was one that doubled our lead, thanks to a cracking finish from Scott.

Kelly again involved — won the ball high up the pitch, drove forward and played a pass into Scott who drilled the ball into the bottom corner.

With just over twenty minutes gone in the second-half the Mariners were in pursuit of a third and won a dangerous free-kick just outside the box.

Paul Blackett stepped up and curled the ball with pace and power around the wall, but unfortunately his effort crashed the top of the crossbar.

Four minutes later Shields came close to scoring that third they were looking for.

Daniel Dodds played an intricate flick-on ball through to Blackett whos’ strike just dragged away from goal.

After a plethora of chances the Mariners bagged that third goal they had been chasing.

Rhys Walsh drove down the right side and fizzed a ball across the box into Scott who of course dispatched the chance, bagging his second of the game and our third in the 90th minute.
