South Shields steal late equaliser thanks to Blaney stunner
Hebburn were the side to break the deadlock in the 77th minute through Jack Foalle.
Shields however, showed a defiant response, getting an equaliser just eight minutes after Foalles' opener.
South Shields came into Tuesday night's fixture, brimming with confidence following their 5-0 victory against Blyth Town on Saturday.
The Mariners started well, with great spells of possession however failed to create any clear-cut chances in the opening 10 minutes of the match.
Eight minutes later, the hosts had their first opportunity of the game, when they received a free-kick after Jasper Sheik was penalised for handling the ball on the edge of the box.
The Mariners keeper was booked for the foul, however Hebburns’ Liam Noble was unable to capitalise from the free-kick, lashing the ball over from 20 yards.
The next real opportunity for the Mariners came in the 37th minute, Dan Savage from the right side of the field fizzed a dangerous-looking ball into the box, unfortunately however, nothing came from the chance.
The Mariners came back out for the second-half and started strong, with a huge chance falling their way inside the opening three minutes.
Robert Briggs found room in the box and delicately flicked it to Louis Burns, however his shot was well defended.
Only six minutes later, Shields had another chance, this time, Savage picked up a loose ball in the hosts half and rolled it to Smith who tried a curling effort that went just over the bar.
Unfortunately for the Mariners, Hebburn were the team to break the deadlock.
In the 77th minute Hebburns’ Foalle opened the scoring, the winger strided forward and released the strike that put the hosts ahead.
Soon after, the Mariners got the goal, some would say they deserved, Evan Blaney was the man to get Shields back level.
David Carson rolled the ball out to Blaney, who whipped a first-time cross that dipped toward goal, the keeper handled the ball but lost his footing and walked the ball into the net.
South Shields: Sheik, Dodds (Brown 71’), Tinkler, Mann, Blaney, Briggs, Carson, McGowan (E. Smith 46’), Savage
(Evitt 60’), Burns (Robinson 86’), McGurk (L. Clarke 30’)
