Match Preview: South Shields vs Chester

South Shields aim to extend their unbeaten home record when they take on Chester in Vanarama National League North on Saturday (3pm kick-off).

The Mariners have won nine and drawn two of their 11 home fixtures in all competitions so far this season, and are on a run of 10 consecutive clean sheets at 1st Cloud Arena.

Tuesday's 0-0 draw against Curzon Ashton left them third in the table, two points behind leaders Tamworth.

Chester drew 1-1 with Alfreton Town in midweek and are 17th, but with multiple games in hand on all other teams in the division as a result of their run to the first round of the Emirates FA Cup.

Julio's thoughts

Shields manager Julio Arca has warned his side to ignore the league table heading into Saturday's game.

He said: "We have to just keep working hard and that takes us to this match against Chester.

“We are well aware of their capabilities and ambition, and know that their current position in the table is something of a false one because they have played fewer games than everyone else.

“Every game is difficult in this league, whether it’s physical or technical, and we’re expecting another hard one against them.

“We have done the right things this week and recovered well, and this is a match we are determined to get points from.”

Team news

Shields remain without Joao Gomes, who is sidelined with a knee injury, and have a doubt over Aaron Martin after he was forced off in Tuesday's match with a quad injury.
