Jones brace condemns SSFC Women to West End loss

Eve Jones netted a quickfire brace as South Shields Women fell to a 2-1 defeat to Sunderland West End Ladies on Sunday.

Within the first 14 minutes of the game, the visitors saw themselves two goals to the good.

Two minutes later, Shields bagged the goal to get them back into the game through Jen Wootten.

The Mariners were aiming to bounce back in style following last Sunday’s heavy 7-1 defeat against Spennymoor Town Ladies in the NERWFL Premier Division.

Shields faced a West End side who were yet to pick up any points this campaign and hoped they would emulate last season’s home victory.

Sunday’s fixture didn’t get off to the best of starts for Shields, as the away side scored the opener inside nine minutes.

The first goal of the game was tucked away by Jones into the bottom left corner, after a great ball over the top.

Five minutes later, she bagged her second, after again being played in with a similar ball through the middle.

Shields started to grow into the game and were in pursuit of the goal that could bring them back into the mix.

Almost immediately after, they were duly rewarded, with Wootten smashing the ball into the roof of the net, following Asia Jota and Ellie White's combination.

With just more than 10 minutes before the half-time whistle, Shields looked as though they had scored an equaliser.

Annece Legg found herself with space, turned and struck the ball in the half-turn, however it strayed wide.

In the second-half, the Mariners looked much more sharp and were looking for that crucial leveller.

In the 64th minute, they came close again, with Legg’s free-kick smashing the woodwork.

With only a minute to play, Anna Yeakey kept the Mariners in the game with a superb save from Jones’ long-range strike.

Shields are next in action this Sunday when they travel to Alnwick Town Ladies in the Second Round Qualifying of the Adobe Women's FA Cup - full match details to follow soon.
