Sophie Greener says that fortunes were going to turn for South Shields Women at some point, and she was delighted to have made it happen on Saturday night.
She provided Eve Gatens with the team’s third goal of the evening, as the lasses confidently put aside any past struggles with a well-earned 3-0 victory against Harrogate Town AFC Women.
After a few weeks without a game, and a little while longer without a victory under their belts, it was easy to see why the lasses were so relieved and overjoyed after the final whistle blew.
“Yeah, it feels good especially with how much it means to the girls,” Greener said.
“We have all been putting in the hard work at training and on game days it was only a matter of time until we got out of the rough patch.”
Shields took to The Exercise Stadium where they entertained a crowd of 918, and they were well up against a vociferous support, who did all they could to cheer on the hosts.
She continued: “It was a good experience. We prepared for the game well and all the girls were so up for it.
“We were all buzzing to be playing at a good ground in front of many fans and putting on a show for them - to walk away with the win was a bonus as well!”
Greener’s assist was something of a beauty, given she took the ball from the half-way line all the way to the edge of the box before launching a superb cross to find an eager Gatens.
She added: “It felt good to get the assist and to make an impact and it was great to see Eve on the scoresheet after some time away. She’s been a big miss.”
The games keep coming for the Mariners, as Sunderland West End Ladies - fresh off the back of a resounding 5-1 victory against Wallsend BC Women - visit 1st Cloud Arena.
Having had that experience of playing in front of a strong crowd at the weekend, there is no doubt everybody is well up to do it all over again during midweek.
“I think all the girls are up for Wednesday night; we all love playing at 1st Cloud,” she finished.
“It’s going to be an exciting game, it always is against Sunderland West End, and after coming from a big win against Harrogate, it just gives us that little bit more confidence.”
Kick-off at 1st Cloud Arena (NE32 3UP) is at 7pm this Wednesday, April 2nd. It is £3 entry and free for season ticket holders - visit our social media channels for updates closer to matchday.
