Kennedy Green was delighted to see the hard work during the week pay off during South Shields Women’s 3-1 win against Ossett United Women on Sunday.
It took a lot of fight and determination within the group to turn things around after the hosts initially took the lead, but a second-half comeback was completed thanks to efforts by Faye Killeen, Tianna Hill and Annece Legg.
Revelling in her delight following the Mariners’ hard-fought victory, Green beamed:
“Everything we have been working on in training is coming together and it really showed in our 90 minutes.”
It was the lasses’ first outing in the NERWFL Premier Division since Sunday, September 28th when Legg scored four goals in a second-half blitz against Wallsend BC Women.
And with the team in cup action for the next fortnight, it gave them a little taste of what is to come later in the season with a backlog of league action waiting in the wings.
Green said: “It was good to get back in our league to reset so we can come back better for our cup games.”
Sunday’s game was significant for many reasons, not least as it gave Killeen her first goal for the club after much trying and persistence, so the joy among the squad was heartwarming.
It also offered Hill and Legg further goalscoring contributions, with them up to five goals and nine goals respectively.
“I was ecstatic for Faye,” Green continued.
“She’s been working so hard, pressing in attack game after game and finally getting her goal, it just shows her determination.
“I’m also happy that Tianna and Annece scored out there, just showing how dangerous they are in the attack.”
Coming up next is a trip across the River Tyne to face Wallsend BC Women in the Second Round of the NERWFL League Cup, a revived competition for this season.
“I am looking forward to this game and playing with my team,” she finished.
“It should be a good game to show our desire to win.”
Match details for this Sunday’s visit to Wallsend BC Women will be confirmed in due course.
