SSFC is delighted to welcome Darling’s Pharmacy as its new back of shirt sponsor for the 2022-23 season.

The historic family-run business has been serving the people of South Tyneside for over a century and as part of its 125th anniversary celebrations, has decided to become a playing kit partner of the club for the first time.

The Darling’s Pharmacy name will appear on the back of the Mariners’ men’s first-team shirts throughout next season and will also be included on all replica shirts sold to supporters.

Support such as this from recognised local companies is invaluable to the club as it seeks to make the 2022-23 campaign a success on and off the pitch, and adds to the growing sense of community as the town pulls together to play its part in an exciting new period in the club’s history.

The iconic Darling’s name will be seen sitting proudly on the back of the club’s new away shirt for the first time on its official release date of Friday, July 1st.

Darling’s Pharmacy chairman Paul Darling said: “My brother Ian and I are delighted to support the club by sponsoring the back of the shirts and having the name of the pharmacy printed there.

“As Shields folk will see, Darling’s is investing very heavily in its fleet of delivery vans and in redeveloping all of our pharmacies, and so this is a personal sponsorship by Ian and me.

“With this sponsorship we honour the memory of those who have built the pharmacies in the last 125 years: our great-great uncle John, grandparents William and Muriel, parents Bill and Ann, and this generation Ian and myself. Ian and I will also be making contributions to other sports in our town.

“The family has always believed passionately in Shields having its own successful football club and we are delighted to support the Mariners’ efforts this season.”

The family’s support of the club spans several decades, with Paul and Ian having served as the stadium announcer at Simonside Hall in the early 1970s.

South Shields FC executive director Glen Stidolph said: “We are delighted to greatly strengthen our partnership with Darling’s Pharmacy, which has such an incredible history in our town.

“The family has been serving the people of South Shields and the wider South Tyneside area for well over 100 years now and for them to use their 125th anniversary celebrations to extend that support to the football club is extremely humbling for us.

“It will be an honour for us to have their name on the men’s first-team and replica shirts next season and we are hugely proud to be associated with Darling’s. I’m sure our fans will be very pleased to see such an iconic South Shields company prominently supporting the club.

“This is one of several key new and strengthened partnerships we are entering as we head into a challenging and exciting new season, which is key to our growth as a club.

“It simply wouldn’t be possible to achieve our goals if we did not have such a thriving and vibrant set of supportive partners, which reinforces our commitment to the sustainability of the club by growing together.”

Darling’s was established by John Darling in 1905 and the pharmacy has been passed through generations of the family in the 117 years since.

The first reference to the Darling family in pharmacies in the history of South Shields is to the firm of Walker & Darling in the ward directories for 1897 and 1898, meaning the 125th anniversary commemorations are now in full swing.

The date of 1897 is a particularly significant one, as it is also the year South Shields Athletic AFC – the first football club bearing the town’s name – was formed, strengthening the links between Darling’s and the Mariners.

Darling’s has branches at Chichester Corner (near Chichester Metro Station), Dean Road and next to Farnham Medical Centre, with Darling’s aiming to provide a professional and honest approach to pharmacy.

Services offered by Darling’s include flu jabs, medicine use reviews, medication, monitored dosage systems, online prescriptions, stop smoking advice, emergency contraception, minor ailments treatment and advice.

Darling’s also provides a free prescription delivery service across South Tyneside, delivering urgent prescriptions the same day and aiming to deliver all non-urgent prescriptions within 24 hours of receiving them from the GP.
